  15. <p>     DIED. The Rev. Ralph David Abernathy, 64, civil rights
  16. activist who took over leadership of the Southern Christian
  17. Leadership Conference after the assassination of Martin Luther
  18. King Jr.; of a heart attack; in Atlanta. Abernathy befriended
  19. King when they were Baptist ministers in Montgomery. Together
  20. they led the 1955 Montgomery bus boycott and formulated the
  21. nonviolent civil rights strategy that dramatically undermined
  22. segregation in the South. After King's death in 1968, Abernathy
  23. headed the S.C.L.C. until he was forced to resign in 1977. He
  24. was criticized by many civil rights leaders last fall for
  25. writing in his autobiography about King's sexual adventures.
